Pitt Panthers RB Israel Abanikanda injured for Syracuse game

PITTSBURGH — The ACC Network revealed some devastating news for the Pitt Panthers on their pre-game show. Even though Israel Abanikanda was announced as running back on the Acrisure Stadium PA system, Rodney Hammond took the first shots.

Abanikanda is “not expected to play” against the Orange, according to a spokesperson for Pitt, after sustaining an injury late in the North Carolina game.

It’s a huge loss for Pitt. Abanikanda is among the nation’s leaders in all-around yards, rushing yards and scored touchdowns. His speed makes him a game-changer for the Panthers’ struggling offense.

Hammond is likely to take the majority of the shots this afternoon. Vincent Davis and C’Bo Flemister are the two tailbacks behind him.
