Physical activity accessible to all

Everyone should have the opportunity to engage in physical activity, regardless of age or ability. We Can Move works together to ensure everyone can get active in a way that works for them.

In Gloucestershire, one in five of us has a long-term disability or health condition. However, people with a disability or health condition are much more likely to have barriers to physical activity.

The pandemic has affected everyone’s activity levels, but people with disabilities or long-term health conditions have been hit even harder by Covid-19 and have been significantly less active than people without disabilities during lockdown.

Now that we are recovering from the pandemic, we want to encourage people with disabilities and long-term health conditions to get active in a way that suits them by highlighting some of the fantastic inclusive and accessible activities available in Gloucestershire. These include:

BEAM Gymnastics, an activity provider in Cirencester that helps children with additional emotional, physical, behavioral and sensory challenges to participate in gymnastics. Inclusion is at the heart of everything BEAM! Is. Supporting children to achieve their “I can” statements, BEAM! emphasizes the celebration of individual achievement through movement.

Longlevens Rugby The Gloucester club offers mixed ability rugby which helps people of all abilities learn and play rugby. Longlevens MAR is aimed at people aged 17 and over and offers the opportunity to be competitive or simply participate as a recreational player; play on contact, or take a step back from physical impact. Longlevens MAR has a place on the pitch for everyone.

DLK Integration Sports is an activity provider that helps people of all ages and abilities play multiple sports, including rugby walking. Set up during the pandemic, DLK Inclusion Sports aspires to offer schools and communities activity sessions suitable for everyone. With some of their community rugby walk sessions in one of Gloucestershire’s most iconic locations – Gloucester Cathedral!

Inspire trust is an activity provider that also runs leisure facilities in Gloucester, such as the GL1 Leisure Center and Oxstalls Sports Park. Aspire Trust has facilities and activities suitable for everyone, and offers many inclusive activity sessions.

Sarah Haden-Godwin, Physical Activity Specialist for Health, Active Aging and Disability at Active Gloucestershire said: “People with disabilities and long-term health conditions are half as likely to be physically active due to the number of barriers they face when it comes to becoming active. Yet, 4 out of 5 would like to do more physical activity.

“There are many groups and organizations across Gloucestershire that provide great inclusive and accessible activities, but we can all play a part in making physical activity normal and easy for everyone.

“Active Gloucestershire is passionate and committed to Gloucestershire being an inclusive, accessible and physically active county in which to live and work and that we can work with to make this vision a reality.”
