Matara District Sports Complex to be Gymnastics Training Center


The Matara District Sports Complex was handed over to the Sri Lanka Gymnastics Association under an agreement to use it as a gymnastics training center for the Asian region.

The sports development department always does its activities to promote the game while providing infrastructure to players as well as to the respective sports organizations. The ministry also authorized the gymnastics association to carry out management activities at the Matara Kotawila sports complex through the agreement.

Sri Lankan gymnastics made history when Milka Gehani became the first gymnast from Sri Lanka to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics and it was a remarkable achievement. The Sri Lankan gymnastics team took third place at the recently concluded Central Asian Gymnastics Championships while Nadila Nethwiru won silver in the junior singles event.

Sports Director General Amal Edirisooriya presented his best wishes to the Sri Lankan team on the occasion of the exchange of agreements. The National Sports Council and High Performance Committee have already recognized gymnastics as a medal-winning sport and get their own training center still a big boost to gymnastics in Sri Lanka
