Improve your golf game with 5 home drills


A perfect golf swing is complex and includes several variables in your body’s physiology. Sure, you might think more visits to the driving range and a few lessons will help you drive, but your power and finesse starts with your body.

Building muscle, improving your core strength and increasing your flexibility can help your swing before hitting the course. A few simple exercises you can do at home with minimal equipment can help you drive farther and play better!

1. Russian twists with stability ball

Adding a stability ball to Russian Twists works your core and helps with the flexibility needed to rotate your hips and spine to maximize your backswing and tracking.

  • Lie on your stability ball with your feet flat on the floor and your knees at a 90 degree angle while raising your hips.
  • Join your hands together and raise them above your chest.
  • Rotate your arms and torso to the left as the ball rolls over the back of your shoulders, keeping your feet flat and your hips up.
  • When your arms are parallel to the floor, pause for a few seconds, then slowly return to the starting position and work on the right side. Count this as one repetition.
  • Repeat 10 to 15 times.

Be sure to engage your core during this exercise rather than your back and hips.

2. Medicine Ball Lift

Building core strength is essential for balance and power in your golf swing. Medicine ball lifts engage your core to help your balance and power your golf swing and strengthen arm and chest muscles for accuracy in your swing.

  • Kneel on one leg while your other foot directly in front.
  • Hold a medicine ball down to your left hip with both hands.
  • With your arms straight, bring the ball up to your chest and lift it further across your body to your right shoulder.
  • Repeat this exercise 10 times and do it in the opposite direction by changing position to knees and moving the ball from the right hip to the left shoulder.

3. One-Leg, One-Arm Deadlift

This modified deadlift exercise targets almost every muscle needed in golf, and especially your hamstrings. Since the hamstrings are prone to injury, be sure to warm up before beginning this exercise.

  • Start standing with your feet hip-width apart and parallel.
  • Hold a kettlebell or dumbbell in your left hand in front of your thigh.
  • Lean forward on your hips, shifting your weight to your right leg as your left leg lifts and begins to extend directly behind you with your toes pointing down at the floor.
  • Lean your body forward until your body forms a “T”. Your left arm should hang straight down, holding the weight. Keep a slight bend in your standing leg.
  • Slowly bring your straight leg back and slowly return to the starting position.
  • Repeat for 10 to 20 reps, then switch to the other leg and arm and repeat.

4. Single Leg Row

This exercise improves the hamstrings, hips, back, and shoulders, which are imperative for a successful, stable, and safe swing.

  • Hold a dumbbell or kettlebell in one hand and bend your torso forward, balancing on the opposite leg with the other stretched behind you.
  • Pull the dumbbell toward your chest, lower it, and return to an upright position.
  • Repeat this exercise 10 to 20 times and repeat on the opposite side.

5. Push-ups with an exercise ball

Push-ups work your chest, triceps, and shoulders. Adding the practice ball and changing the placement of your hands challenges the small, vitally important shoulder blade muscles that are essential for smooth shoulder and back movement during your golf swing .

  • Begin in a push-up position with your hands on the exercise ball, fingers facing outward, and feet on the floor.
  • Lower yourself so that your chest barely touches the ball. Stay stable by squeezing your glutes and core.
  • Control the ball as you push up, keeping your chest as far away from the ball as possible.
  • Repeat for a set of 10-15.

The trick to this exercise is to keep the ball still and your posture as straight as possible to really engage all those shoulder muscles.
