Hooks crushes Winnsboro in playoff game


MOUNT PLEASANT, Texas — Hooks played solid through all four quarters and clinched their ticket to the next round with a 78-53 win over Winnsboro in a playoff Class 3A varsity boys’ basketball game on Tuesday. at the Willie Williams Gym.

“I think we played well,” Hornets head coach Michael Jackson said. “I’m not sure we can play much better than that. We took care of the ball, we shot well and we bounced well. I’m really proud of the way we played on both sides of the pitch. I can’t say enough about our effort tonight.”

Hooks (30-6) shot 56 percent from the field on 32 of 57 shots, turned the ball over just 11 times and grabbed 32 rebounds. The Raiders (19-13) shot 36 percent (18 of 50), had 20 turnovers and 34 rebounds.

Kielon Estell had a game-high 26 points with 7 rebounds for the Hornets. Carveion Johnson had 20 points and pulled out 6 rebounds and Keyshawn Walls had 18 points. Jayden Baird led all players with 12 boards for Hooks.

Winnsboro was led by Will Wilcox’s 19-point performance and teammate Rance Brown finished with 11.

Coach Jackson began to empty his bench in the fourth quarter. Carveion Johnson led the Hornets with six points in fourth. The Raiders beat Hooks, 18-10, in the fourth, but the Hornets beat Winnsboro in every other quarter.

Carveion Johnson’s 3-ball in the third quarter started an 18-2 run for Hooks. The run put the Hornets up, 63-29. During the run, Estell stole the ball from the Raiders, sped down the field, and dunked it to ignite the crowd. Hooks outscored Winnsboro in the third, 23-9.

Hooks entered the locker room at halftime, 45-26.

Estell fired a shot from 3-point range as the Hornets came out on a 13-5 surge to start the second quarter. During the push, Carveion Johnson scored 7 points, including a 3-pointer. Hooks narrowly edged Winnsboro in the quarter, 15-14.

Walls drove for a layup for the first Hornet points of the game in the first quarter. His lay-up started a 12-2 run in which he had another lay-up, Estell had a pair of lay-ups and Jatavious Johnson shoved his way in for a lay-up. Baird bounced off a missed shot and scored for a comeback for Hooks on the run.

The Hornets shot 59% from the field in the first half on 19 of 32 shots. The Raiders shot 7 of 22 for 32% from the field.

Hooks plays White Oak or Troup in a Class 3A playoff contest later this week.
