Some define MVP as the most valuable player for their specific team. If so, then the definition of MVP should simply be Emma Troxell.

Troxell, a senior forward, was a key cog in the success of the Bushland women’s basketball team a year ago. After being a member of the Amarillo Globe-News Super Team last season, she is our pick for AGN Pre-Season Player of the Year.

“It’s awesome,” she said. “Honestly, I didn’t expect it, but I’m very excited to have (this recognition). I think it definitely puts perspective on the season and I think I have to live up to that and I can’t take it lightly.

Troxell has been exceptional, averaging a double-double (18 points and 10 rebounds) last season while maintaining her place among the top scorers and rebounders in the entire Panhandle.

She wouldn’t have those numbers, however, if it weren’t for everything that makes her the player she is.

“Emma is just relentless,” Bushland coach Ty Mayfield said. “She loves basketball. The stats are all there, but at the end of the day, she’s just one of those girls who is relentless in how she approaches it, how she plays it and how she s train.

Troxell has been playing basketball since he was three years old. She says she knew she wanted to play at the college level from a young age and started working tirelessly every day to achieve that dream.

Except the dream came true last summer when she received and accepted an offer to play Division I college basketball for Abilene Christian University. She looks forward to the opportunity, but remembers that she didn’t get there alone.

“My parents set my standards high and I’m still trying to achieve them,” Troxell said. “My high school coaches always put them high, obviously. Austin Johnson from the Academy of Hoops also helped me train for that ability.”

Don’t let her get too modest, though. Mayfield said Troxell put in the work herself to get to this point.

“She’s constantly working on her craft,” Mayfield said. “Whether it’s her free-throw routine, what she does every time on the pitch, Emma does all of those things all the time. Whether it’s in the gym or on the playground, she’s always working on his game.”

An 82% free throw percentage backs that up, but Mayfield adds that it’s what Troxell does off the court, too, that sets her apart.

“She’s just a terrific leader,” he said. “She’s just a great teammate and to me that’s one of the nicest things you can say about a player.”

Troxell also sees herself as a leader. For her, it’s about maintaining balance.

“Off the pitch, we have to have fun, be good friends and teammates,” she said. “On the pitch we have to get serious, buckle up and start working hard.”

Troxell is excited about the opportunity to play at the next level, but she has a job to do this year before she gets there. Mayfield is expecting yet another great season from her and she is expecting the same.

Although a state title is the goal, she doesn’t forget to enjoy every second of high school she can.

“Obviously, the big goal for every team is to get to declare and win,” Troxell said. “I’m just looking forward to having a great last season, everyone is working hard and coming together to give their best and go as far as we can.
