AIT third place game: Patriots sink Violets | Sports

ASHLAND Jaxon Smith initially lost control of the ball as he led the lane in the dying seconds.

Lincoln County Senior Guard picked him up. And he got a call.

Smith fouled with 2.2 seconds left in a draw for third place in the Ashland invitational tournament against Bowling Green on Thursday night at Anderson Gym. Sandwiched around a timeout, he made both free throws.

The Purples’ Tanner Buttry got a clean glimpse of a 3 from three quarters of the field for the win, but found only glass as the Patriots won, 64-62.

Lincoln County won a game they never led until 3:02. Bowling Green had a 12-point lead in the dying moments of the first period, but the Patriots escaped and were down five in intermission.

“We did a better job defensively playing strong,” Lincoln County coach Jeff Jackson said of the rally. “We did some things better defensively in places and took better care of the ball. We hung on and fought and beat a really, really good basketball team. “

Colton Ralston scored 18 points, connecting on four 3-pointers, for the Patriots (11-3). Tramane Alcorn and Evan Smith – making his first appearance in about five games, Jackson estimated, after battling mononucleosis – added 12 each.

Buttry had 27 points on five treys for the Purples (10-2).

Ralston’s 3 corner at 3:48 forged a tie at 56, the game’s first since 0-0.

Lincoln County’s Clayton Davis cleared an offensive board on the next trip and added two free throws, and Bowling Green never led again, although he tied the game against Elijah Starks and -1 at 41.8 seconds to play.

But the Patriots got the ball in the dying seconds and Smith made the most of it.

“I’m really proud of our kids,” Jackson said. “We made parts when needed. “

Lincoln County started the season 9-0 before losing three of four before Thursday’s win. The Patriots get the second qualifying 6-foot-8 William Bishop next week in addition to Smith’s return, which Jackson is excited about.

“It gave us a chance to play with other kids,” he said of the incompetence. “They all showed up and played well, and that added depth to our bench. Hope we will be better at it.
